The 13 long dorsal spines carry potent venom causing severe pain, swelling and nausea; spines stay active for hours after death. Remove it by cutting the spines with shears and never handle it in the water. Treat with hot water and go to an emergency department. The species is invasive in the Mediterranean and fishing it is encouraged.
