Tiny round almost tail-less gamebird, barely larger than a sparrow: the smallest gamebird in Turkey
Sandy back with long cream lance-shaped streaks, and pale and dark stripes along the head
Male shows a dark anchor-shaped throat pattern; female has a plain buff throat and finely spotted breast
Flushes explosively from underfoot, flies low and straight for a few dozen metres and drops into cover; almost impossible to flush twice
Wings long and pointed, unlike the short rounded wings of partridges, betraying its migratory habit
Whistled three-syllable "wet-my-lips" repeated at night and at dawn, revealing the bird long before it is seen
