Dorsal, pelvic and anal fin spines are venomous and cause hours of intense pain and swelling; spines stay active after death. Handle with a cloth or pliers, immerse the wound in hot (about 45 °C) water for 30-90 minutes and seek medical care. The flesh itself is not toxic and is eaten in soup.
