Turkey's most venomous spider. The bite causes latrodectism: severe muscle cramps, board-like abdominal pain, sweating, nausea and raised blood pressure within half an hour. Deaths are very rare but children and the elderly are at risk — go to hospital promptly; antivenom exists. Lives under stones and logs in fields and vineyards; use a stick and gloves.
