Male matt black with an orange-yellow bill and eye-ring
Female dark brown with a pale mottled throat and dull bill, easily taken for another species
No white spotting on the body, unlike starling; the male is uniformly coloured
Raises and slowly lowers its tail the moment it lands
Noisily flicks leaf litter aside with its bill while foraging under bushes
Slow, fluty song from rooftops and treetops at dusk; harsh chattering alarm when flushed
