Lepista nuda
The wood blewit is a lilac to purple-pink mushroom of late autumn. It has a distinctive smell likened to orange juice and a pale pink spore print. Raw it causes indigestion, and it can be confused with poisonous violet Cortinarius species.
Coniferous and deciduous woodland, growing as a decomposer on decaying leaf litter.
Found in Europe and North America and apparently introduced to Australia and New Zealand. In Turkey it is called mavi cincile around Bolu and mor mantar around Karaman.
Identification suggestions (from the community or from AI) and the information here may be wrong; this app never confirms that anything is safe to eat. Do not consume wild plants, mushrooms or seafood without expert confirmation. Nothing here is medical advice.
In Australia a satin bowerbird was seen collecting wood blewits to decorate its blue-themed bower.
Raw or undercooked it causes severe indigestion, nausea, vomiting and diarrhoea, and it has been blamed for gastrointestinal upset in some people. It accumulates heavy metals such as lead. Can be confused with violet, rusty-spored poisonous Cortinarius species and with the muscarine-containing lilac bonnet, which causes sweating, salivation and pinpoint pupils.
