Two large oval white shoulder patches on the upper wing, contrasting sharply with the black back
Vent bright red while the rest of the underparts are plain dirty white
Male has a small red nape patch, female none, and the juvenile has an entirely red crown; age and sex read off this alone
Black moustache joins the nape but never reaches the crown; the middle spotted woodpecker's moustache is weak and its crown all red
Drums on dead wood in spring in short rolls under half a second that fade as they speed up; the green woodpecker does not drum but laughs
