Gyromitra esculenta
The false morel is a mushroom with an irregular, reddish-brown cap folded like a brain. Its gyromitrin turns into monomethylhydrazine in the body, harming the liver, nervous system and kidneys, and it can kill. Cooking does not remove all the toxin. In spring it is confused with true morels.
Spring, even as snow melts, on sandy soil under pines and sometimes aspens, often on disturbed ground such as clearings, roadsides and burn sites.
Widespread across Europe and North America; recorded in Turkey from Uşak Province and near Kaş in Antalya Province.
Identification suggestions (from the community or from AI) and the information here may be wrong; this app never confirms that anything is safe to eat. Do not consume wild plants, mushrooms or seafood without expert confirmation. Nothing here is medical advice.
In Turkish folk usage it is also called 'midwife of the morel' and 'half-head mushroom'.
Contains gyromitrin, which turns into monomethylhydrazine in the body; cooking does not remove all of it. Vomiting, diarrhoea, dizziness, headache and fever start 6-12 hours later; severe cases bring liver and kidney damage, seizures, coma and death. Children are hit harder. Confused with true morels; recorded in Uşak and Antalya, Turkey.

Never eat a wild mushroom without showing it to an expert
No mushroom should be picked for eating based on this app or a photo. Deadly species look very like the ones foragers look for, and symptoms start hours later. If you suspect poisoning, call your local poison centre or emergency number right away (in Türkiye: 114).

Deadly poisonous
