Macrolepiota procera
The parasol mushroom is a large fungus whose cap, up to 25 cm wide, looks like a parasol. It has dark scales on the cap, a snakeskin pattern on the stem and a movable ring. The poisonous green-spored parasol and small deadly Lepiota species resemble it.
Well-drained soils in pastures and occasionally woodland, solitary or in groups and fairy rings.
Widespread in temperate Eurasia; whether North American specimens are the same species needs further research.
Identification suggestions (from the community or from AI) and the information here may be wrong; this app never confirms that anything is safe to eat. Do not consume wild plants, mushrooms or seafood without expert confirmation. Nothing here is medical advice.
In parts of Europe it is called the 'snake's hat' because of its scales.
Toxic when raw and causes gastrointestinal upset in some people. The real danger is its lookalikes: the green-spored parasol causes violent vomiting and diarrhoea within a few hours, and small deadly Lepiota species cause amatoxin poisoning that starts 6-24 hours later and destroys the liver. Egg-stage young specimens can be mistaken for deadly Amanitas.

Never eat a wild mushroom without showing it to an expert
No mushroom should be picked for eating based on this app or a photo. Deadly species look very like the ones foragers look for, and symptoms start hours later. If you suspect poisoning, call your local poison centre or emergency number right away (in Türkiye: 114).
Tall slender stem with a brown snakeskin pattern below the ring; the green-spored parasol lacks it
Thick, fleshy ring that slides up and down the stem
White spore print and gills; a pale green print or greenish gills means the poisonous green-spored parasol
Cap up to 25 cm with dark brown scales on a pale background and a smooth dark central bump
Very large; deadly Lepiota species are mostly small, only a few centimetres across
